Town Staff to detail property maintenance during summer months

As the weather heats up, keeping your property mowed and maintained takes on a new urgency, especially as the extreme temperatures could result in dangerous situations such as grass fires.

Town ordinances prohibits allowing grass and/or weeds to grow higher than 12 inches. Property owners are also required to maintain the parkway between the sidewalk and the curb or pavement, as well as the right-of-way between any fence, wall or barrier and the curb/pavement. That also includes the area between a fence, wall or barrier within any abutting drainage channel easement to the top of the channel closest to the property.

The ordinance also includes junk or abandoned vehicles on property that are visible from a public space or right-of-way. Those are considered a nuisance and removal may be required.

Town code compliance also includes animals on private residential properties. Large animals and livestock are only permitted on lots that are 2.5 acres or more, with only one animal per each acre of land available for grazing. Any stables or corrals as well as animal feed, bedding and waste must be at least 50 feet from any street or lot line and at least 100 feet from any existing residence. Pasture may extend to the lot line as long as runoff is controlled from flowing onto any adjacent lot or tract.

Denton County Burn ban issued

July 25 includes town of argyle

A burn ban for Denton County has been issued effective immediately, due to continued high temperatures, dried out soil and foliage that presents the potential for grass fires.

Denton County Commissioners Court, upon recommendation by the Denton County Fire Marshal’s Office, issued the ban.

“It is Denton County’s responsibility to ensure the safety of all residents,” said Denton County Fire Marshal Brad Sebastian. While northeast portions of the county has received more rain, southern Denton County is seeing a higher level of drought.

“We continuously monitor the conditions across Denton County and issue burn bans when we believe the potential for a major grass fire exists,” the fire marshal said.

The burn ban prohibits all outdoor burning and limits outdoor cooking and open and enclosed hotwork such as welding to certain conditions to eliminate the potential for grass fires.

Denton County joins another 141 counties in Texas with burn bans currently in place including neighboring Wise and Tarrant counties, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

SPAN offers more than just transportation to seniors and disabled

When it comes to providing services for Argyle seniors, disabled residents and veterans, SPAN Denton County is more than just transportation services.

SPAN works with Denton County Meals on Wheels to provide hot, nutritious noon meals delivered directly to the homes of any seniors or the disabled who are homebound. For those able to get out, group lunches are available at locations throughout the county.

The organization can also provide monthly pet food for home-bound clients who have difficulty affording to care for the fur family members.

Town Hall prepares for renovation

Argyle is currently seeking a project/construction manager for the renovation of Town Hall, expected to begin this fall. Renovations include an update of the Town Hall floors, office spaces, older infrastructure and the building's HVAC system. Town officials are also reviewing possible renovations to the parking lot and the adjacent facility, commonly called the “parsonage.”

A request for proposals and/or qualifications is now being accepted through Aug. 17 to find a company to provide professional project/construction management services. The potential company is required to have a minimum of 10 years’ experience. The town will provide inspection services during the project.

Sign Ordinance designed to improve community appearance

The community development staff is focusing attention on enforcement of the town's sign ordinance with a goal toward preventing a clutter of illegal signs throughout Argyle.

Signs that are not permitted in Argyle include pole signs, flashing signs, neon signs and feather or flag signs. A complete list of unlawful signs are available in Section 14.4.2 of the municipal code on the town website.

Recently staff has found a growing number of Open House and For Sale signs illegally placed in the right-of-way. The ordinance does not allow for signs in the public right-of-way, including signs for real estate, garage sales, lawn care or any signs offering sales or services. Those signs may be confiscated by staff and a $50 fee assessed to reclaim the sign.

Wildlife on the Move draws crowd

Thanks to everyone who joined us at Town Hall July 24 for the Wildlife on the Move: The Unhuggables presentation. Not everyone loves creepy, crawly critters. But those attending enjoyed the meet and greet.
